Foley Gallery is pleased to present New York Narrative, a solo exhibition by Vincent Giarrano. This will be the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery.
A tattooer’s ink penetrates the skin, a glass of red wine is steadied, wardrobes are checked, and cigarettes smoked. We move from the public street to quiet bedrooms, each vignette a small revelation into the life of our young New York residents. Giarrano’s subjects are more punk than preppy, arty than buttoned up. The young women that occupy his realist portraits are urban contemporaries making a life in New York City, following in the footsteps of many young women before them. We are invited into their quieter moments, realistic and candid. The narratives are open, their stories endless, full of possibility Details are revealed, but questions remain.
Giarrano’s scenes are infused with deeply saturated colors, often punctuated with the city’s architectural details, papered construction sites, and graffiti-laden doorways. But we are more often invited in, experiencing the personalized bedrooms of his subjects. Posters, books, plants, and small incidental keepsakes individualize and define what might be an otherwise cookie-cut interior, airless living space that New York apartments have a reputation of being. The moments that are shared are casual, more slice of life than New York drama.
Giarrano has exhibited in major museums, including the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian and the National Portrait Gallery in London. He’s had numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. He currently lives and paints in Connecticut.
Vincent Giarrano’s New York Narrative is on view from May 22 – June 27, 2021. Foley Gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 – 5:30 pm and Sunday, 12 - 5. To request images, please contact the gallery at hello@foleygallery.com.
