Foley Gallery is pleased to present Altered States, a group exhibition featuring over 25 contemporary photographers curated by Michael Foley and Patrick Fleischman.
Altered States begins to explore both the subtle and significant changes found in the alterations that photographers record in both natural settings and controlled environments.
Sometimes the photographer bears witness to the process of change as in the work of German artist Martin Klimas who intentionally destroys flowers and their vases, revealing the moment of impact to be tranquil and chaotic in simultaneous fashion.
In others, the change is made over time and although we cannot see the process, we start to understand how it has come to be as in the work of Richard Barnes who photographs bird’s nests that have been naturally excavated from trees and now reside in the collection of the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology in Camarillo, California. A combination of natural and manmade elements, these hybrid ornithological homes fuse our discards with the natural world.
Our states are also altered by our emotions. Andrew Bush looks at us when we are least expecting, driving on the open road at faster speeds than a photographer can catch up to…unless they have a car of their own.
Carrie Levy gazes intimately at men in the middle of their…what? Acid trip? Physical transformation? Death rattle? Her work is an invitation to wonder.
Technological advancement in photography has allowed for subtle and not so subtle alterations as in the work of Aziz+Cucher’s natural worlds, Julie Blackmon’s domestic scenes and the “children” of Loretta Lux.
